2025 Starr Hill Pathways at Virginia Polo

For the third year in a row Virginia Polo has hosted seventh graders from UVA’s Starr Hill Pathways program. This program run by the UVA Equity Center “is a college and career pipeline program for students from 7th grade through high school graduation. In this comprehensive program, The Center for Community Partnerships knits together community and university resources to ensure that youth from Charlottesville City and Albemarle County can make their college and career dreams a reality. During middle school years, Starr Hill Pathways scholars are given the opportunity to explore different career pathways through summer camps and school-year programming days with community partner organizations.” To learn more, check out their website here.

Virginia Polo offers a “Vet Tech” pathway to seventh grade students. This summer, from June 16-20, Abbie Grant and Jenny Germroth introduced 8 SHP students to the Virginia Polo Center, horses, and to their first view of polo. Along with our in-house education, we were generously joined by farrier John Digney to introduce the kids to the horse shoeing profession, Dr. Roe from Blue Ridge Equine Clinic to demonstrate equine veterinary medicine, and Billy Baldwin to learn about property management.

Along with the windows to these professional worlds we also gave the kids the opportunity to enjoy time at the beautiful Virginia Polo Center, and share the joy of horses, dogs, and the farm life we love.
