The Virginia Polo Club is lucky to have had a number of great contributors in its formative years. Two of those important members were Dick “Remo” Riemenschneider and Don “Grubby” Grubbs. To honor the efforts of these two gentlemen, and help their names live on, Virginia Polo alum Richard “Dick” Latham created the Grubby and Remo Awards. Each year these will be bestowed upon Virginia Polo Club members who embody the same characteristics as these important alumni.
The Grubby Memorial Award
The Grubby Memorial Award was created to recognize someone devoted to the club, that works hard to help with the horses and the events, a “worker bee” type. To learn more about Don Grubbs and his impact on Virginia Polo, click here.
Edward Pasco in the 2025 Spring Club Tournament
This year one player, fourth year Edward Pasco, stood out for this award. Edward has played in the Club for the last year and is ever-ready to help. When at polo he does not even need to be asked to help, if he sees Abbie throwing hay to the ponies, he’ll come help load the gator or even start throwing hay to the nearby pastures without the gator. He has been a fast learner and dramatically improved his polo skills in his two semesters in the club. We are lucky to have Edward stay this summer to help with the camps, Starr Hill Pathways, interscholastic clinics, and to work the ponies. Thank you Edward for carrying on the Virginia Polo spirit!

Augusta Halle scoring in a fall 2024 game against Skidmore Polo
This year’s most improved player goes to first year Augusta Halle. Augusta had only a year of polo under her belt she when came to Virginia Polo last fall as a brand new UVA student. She plays on the club team and has steadily improved her skills over the two semesters of her first year.
Along with her ever-increasing polo skills, Augusta works hard on the fundraising goals for students (a quality Remo would appreciate!), avidly selling ads for the magazine and keeping an eye out for opportunities that could benefit the Virginia Polo Club. She is a ray of sunshine at the barn and full of infectious enthusiasm.
Congratulations Augusta! We are excited to see you continue to improve in the years to come!
