Congrats to our Teams! by Coach Lou Lopez

Please join me in congratulating both of our varsity teams for the spectacular results at this years United States Polo Association Intercollegiate National Championships. The amount of effort on and off the field in preparation for this event is monumental.

Our Men beat UCONN in the semi final round by a staggering margin for the chance to play Cornell in the final. Virginia led for the whole game against Cornell and put on quite a display in a hard fought, well played match.

Our Women beat their year long rival, U Kentucky, in a real nail biter. Virginia was down by one when the whistle blew with one second left on the clock. Steady nerves allowed Julia Steiner to score the tying goal keeping the dream alive as we entered a penalty shootout. One at a time all players from both teams walked up to the penalty line and either hit just left or right of the goal. Our last chance for success was with Kyle Sheehan, who hit the center of the goal putting them into the finals. They were to face the tough Cornell women. Our Women fought hard and finally led by one in the third period. In the last three minutes of the third period Cornell answered back with 4 unanswered goals putting them ahead by 3. We fought for seven and one half minutes in the last period showing everyone that our Virginia Women are true competitors.

I also want to recognize our alternates, Todd Thurston, and Vicky Freidrichs for their willingness to practice hard all year long and take a week off from school to attend this tournament in a supporting roll.

I would also like to thank Rob Rinehart and LJ Lopez for their help in making these teams two of the best teams that Virginia has ever sent to a National tournament.
