A Tribute - Rodger Rinehart
Rodger Rinehart was a remarkable inspiration to all of us as the Virginia Polo Club matured from the early days at the Rivana River field, on to the Farmington Show Arena and finally to Forest Lodge where the Virginia Polo Center is today.Rodger’s enthusiasm, tenacity and uncanny ability to drive forward convinced everyone that we would be successful if we assumed a little more risk, moved out of the box and together took to the optimistic road of leadership.
Whenever the Polo Club needed a coach, an umpire, extra horses, an infusion of cash, or an entirely new site, Rodger was there doing the right thing at the right time. We all have Rodger to thank for many things dear to our hearts such as the creation of the manifest that all students work hard for their polo experience and learn on the job that business sense that only comes from a hand’s on approach.
Rodger had the unique vision to create the finest college facility in the Nation and to recruit students to the University who would help to produce great polo teams that were competitive on the National level.
Many students were personally re-focused to achieve academic completion as well as representing the Virginia tradition of sportsmanship in the polo arena.
Rodger had the forethought to urge the transition from a polo club with everchanging membership into a non-profit corporation that would perpetuate a Board of Directors of businessminded persons to ensure Virginia Polo’s ongoing success. He also developed our long standing business relationship with the University of Virginia Alumni Association.
With the formation of a structured board, an endowment fund was established to ensure the Polo Center’s financial future. Rodger was our first Board Chairman and through his leadership and efforts, we have been able to implement a master plan for the Virginia Polo Center.
We all have much to thank Rodger for and his great smile will be missed by all polo alumni.
